Lakeland PD cracks down on pedestrian violations

LAKELAND (FOX 13) - Police are cracking down on drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists that break traffic laws along Memorial Blvd.

Lakeland police and the Florida Highway Patrol worked together Friday afternoon to stop anyone who did not follow the rules of the road.

More than 153 people were stopped. Most got a warning, while 12 received citations.

"We have a significant presence out here and again our main objective is to do some education out here and to try to keep people safe," said Christopher Miller with the Florida Highway Patrol.

Pedestrians were seen walking through traffic lanes and drivers did not stop when pedestrians had the right-of-way.

"They're scary because some people they just come out around the corner when they see the pedestrian light on they come anyway," said Barbara Edwards, who was walking with the assistance of a walker.

Although most people received warnings, pedestrian and cyclist citations can be pricey, starting at about $64.
