A 14-year-old boy has died after accidentally being shot at a Sarasota gun range.

It happened at High Noon Gun Range, at 4583 Bee Ridge Road.

The victim was transported to Sarasota Memorial hospital, where he died. He was identified Monday as 14-year-old Stephen J. Brumby.

Sarasota County detectives said the boy was accidentally shot by his father, William Brumby, who was in the last shooting lane. Detectives said William Brumby fired a round and a spent shell casing deflected off the wall and went into his shirt. As he removed the casing from his shirt, detectives said he inadvertently pointed the firearm directly behind him and accidentally fired the gun.

The bullet struck 14-year-old Stephen.

The store was immediately closed after the incident.

No one else was injured.

No charges are pending against William Brumby at this time, according to detectives. The Sarasota County Sheriff's department are investigating.
