Accused double-murderer found unfit to stand trial

A second doctor says he agrees with the previous report regarding murder defendant Devon Arthurs' mental ability to stand trial.

Arthurs - the doctors say - is unfit to stand trial for the deaths of his two roommates.

Not long after his arrest, Arthurs alluded to police he was mentally unstable.

"I am very prone to getting angry a lot. I might be sick in that sense. I want to get help for that," Arthurs said. "I would much rather be at a mental hospital, where I should have been."

Now that Arthurs has been found unfit to stand trial, he will be sent to a state hospital for treatment. The goal will be to rehabilitate his mental state so a trial can move forward.

Back in May 2017, Arthurs allegedly shot two of his three roommates at their Tampa apartment on Amberly Drive.

After trying to take employees at a nearby store as hostages, police arrested Arthurs, who then led them to the crime scene.

According to Arthurs, he and the victims - 22-year-old Jeremy Himmelman and 18-year-old Andrew Oneschuk - shared neo-Nazi sympathies.

But when Arthurs had a change of heart and converted to Islam, his roommates were not happy.

He told police he killed the two because they disrespected his new faith.

Arthurs later led investigators to his third roommate, Brandon Russell, who was found to have explosives and bomb-making materials.

Arthurs said Russell was planning to blow up power plants and synagogues around Florida.

"The things they were planning were horrible. They were planning bombings on countless people, they were planning to kill civilian life," said Arthurs.

Arthurs then pointed police to a Nazi recruiting website he said belonged to Russell. The site was called Atom Waffen which means atomic bomb in German.

Investigators say Russell had a framed picture of Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh on his dresser.

Since his arrest, Arthurs helped prosecutors with their federal case against Russell. He was convicted and sentenced to 15 years in prison.

If Arthurs' case goes to trial, he will not face the death penalty.
