Baby girl in foster care dies after Clearwater dog attack

CLEARWATER (FOX 13) - The mother of a baby girl killed by a dog attack while in foster care in Clearwater told FOX 13 she was set to be reunified with her child soon.

According to Clearwater Fire Rescue, paramedics were called to a home on Fairwood Avenue just after 2 p.m. where they found 7-month-old Khloe Ann Williams suffering from dog bites.

The Clearwater Police Department initially said the girl was in the care of her grandmother and the dog was a family dog. Police clarified Friday evening that the baby was in a foster home.

The foster agency in Pinellas County, Eckerd Connects confirmed the child was in a foster home, as well. 

The child's mother, Shavon Grossman told FOX 13's Jordan Bowen two caseworkers from Directions for Living came to tell her the news about her baby. She said she was still in disbelief.

"She's not even big enough to walk or crawl or anything, to even be able to mess with a dog. I don't understand how she was even around a dog that could do this," Grossman said.

Neighbors, meanwhile, said dozens of first responders tried to treat the baby at the scene. She was ultimately taken to Mease Countryside Hospital, where she died.

The animal was taken to Pinellas County Animal Control.

Clearwater police and the Department of Children and Families are investigating.
