A man and his dog were rescued by the Coast Guard after they were lost at sea for three days.

They were found sixty miles west of Hudson.

The rescue team found the man, only because his sailboat caught fire and they spotted the smoke.

The man and his dog were on a dinghy from his damaged sailboat.

The Coast Guard crew used an MH 60 rescue helicopter to lower crew members down to the pair.

"I am glad that we were able to safely pick him up," said Lt. Chanel Lee of the Coast Guard. "I wish him well in the rest of his endeavors."

The Coast Guard says the man was taken to a hospital for treatment and observation.

"It is a feeling of relief," said Lee. "It's also a feeling of excitement."

The dog was also taken for medical treatment.
