TAMPA (FOX 13) - A boil water advisory has been issued after a water main break flooded a Tampa neighborhood Thursday.
The 36-inch water main started gushing water onto N Rome Ave., between Hillsborough Avenue and W Hannah Avenue, around 5 p.m.
Tampa police said the broken main was turned off by 8 p.m. However, Rome Avenue will remain closed from Rio Vista, north to Hanna due to the large hole created by the break.
The view from SkyFOX showed water pouring from the roadway. Water flooded a few homes closest to the break.
One homeowner saw the water flowing toward his house and managed to use a board to block some of it from coming in.
Other residents were not so lucky, as inches of water filled their homes.
“The living room, the water went under the sofa and, in the other room, I was able to pick everything up before the water got in here,” homeowner Tony Gonzalez said. “It’s a mess. We have a mess in the house. It’s gonna take a little while to get everything right again.”
The Tampa Water Department said, as a precaution, it is advising residents and businesses within the area of Interstate 275 to the east, Dale Mabry to the west, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to the south and Busch to the north to boil water for drinking and food preparation.
The boil water notice will remain in place for two days.
