A 9-year-old boy was hospitalized in critical condition after being pulled from a Tampa pool this morning, setting off a scramble to find his family.

According to police, it was around 11:30 a.m. when a good Samaritan spotted the unconscious boy and pulled him from the pool at the Ashford Place Apartments off 30th Street North, which is in the University Square area.

Officers performed CPR on him until paramedics arrived. He remains at John Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg in critical condition.

Police spent several hours trying to identify the boy and find his family. They have since identified him as Jachoix Racyne, a 9-year-old who lives in the complex.

According to police, he was left in the care of his grandfather while his mother was at work. The grandfather was in the apartment while the boy was out playing; it’s not yet clear how he wound up in the pool.
