Brevard County deputy killed in crash on Interstate 95

A Brevard County Sheriff's Office deputy was killed in a crash on Interstate 95 early Saturday morning. 

The crash happened just after 5 a.m. on I-95 near mile marker 217, just north of State Road 50. 

Sheriff's Office officials identified the deputy as Field Training Officer Kevin Stanton. Stanton died after his his marked cruiser was struck by a semi-truck.  

According to investigators, a tire on the semi truck separated and caused the truck to swerve into the far left lane, where the deputy's vehicle was traveling. The patrol car crashed into the back of the semi truck. 

Stanton was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The southbound lanes of I-95 were closed for several hours after the crash, but have since reopened. 

The Sheriff's Office said that Stanton was hired as a deputy in October 2007 and has received numerous letters of commendation, commendable service awards and was nominated for a Life Saving Award during his 10 years of service. 

The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
