New attorney representing driver in Bayshore crash for post-conviction hearing

One of the drivers who was sentenced in a deadly street-racing crash on Bayshore Blvd. in 2018 has a new attorney.

Prosecutors said Cameron Herrin was 18-years-old when he was racing then-17-year-old John Barrineau on Bayshore Boulevard.

Prosecutors said Herrin's car plowed into Jessica Raubenolt and her one-year-old daughter, Lillia, killing both of them.

Barrineau cut a deal with the state in exchange for his cooperation and was sentenced to six years in prison.

Cameron Herrin is in court on Tuesday for a post-conviction relief hearing after receiving a 24-year prison sentence back in 2021.

The backstory:

Herrin is serving a 24-year prison sentence, after entering an open plea.

On Tuesday, Herrin's new attorney appeared via Zoom conference for a post-conviction hearing.

His attorney filed a motion for ineffective assistance of counsel.

"The claim in that motion concerns the failure to retain a reconstruction expert prior to entering the plea in this case," Herrin's attorney said.

The new attorney for Cameron Herrin appeared at a Zoom conference Tuesday for a post-conviction relief hearing.

Herrin's attorney says they're bringing in a reconstruction expert that wasn't previously used.

He also asked for the surveillance video along Bayshore Blvd. that captured the street-racing.

"We just simply want our expert to be able to have the things the state's experts had in formulating their conclusion regarding the speed prior to the accident," his attorney said.

Barrineau cut a deal with the state in exchange for his cooperation and was sentenced to six years in prison.

Herrin's 24-year sentence is six years short of the maximum, which is 30.

With the open guilty plea, the judge ultimately decided his sentence – not a jury.
