Cellphone case that looks like a gun prompts lockout at Tampa high school

TAMPA - A Tampa high school went into a lockout Friday morning after a student thought they saw another student with a handgun.
What we know:
According to Tampa police, officers responded to Freedom High School just before 9:30 a.m. after a student thought they saw another student with a gun.
The reporting student shared their concern with a teacher, who then notified the school resource officer.

The student in question, who did not make any threats, was found in the school gym carrying a cellphone in a case made with a replica handgun attached.
What they're saying:
"We understand that news like this is deeply concerning and can cause anxiety for parents and the entire community," said Chief Lee Bercaw. "Thankfully, in this case, there was no active threat. We appreciate the swift action of the student and teacher in reporting this concern. Their actions are a testament to the importance of ‘See Something, Say Something.' We urge all parents to take this opportunity to talk with your children about school safety, what is appropriate to bring to school, and the importance of reporting anything that seems suspicious."
In response to the original report, police put the school in a lockout status while a search of the school grounds was conducted.
What's next:
This remains an active investigation. Charges may be forthcoming, according to police.
