Clearwater Beach pier to get $375,000 facelift

CLEARWATER BEACH (FOX 13) - One of the Tampa Bay Area’s best-known landmarks is getting a much-needed facelift. Pier 60 on Clearwater Beach is getting a $375,000 repair and remodel job. 

“This project will be replacing the roof, and then also the siding and the windows of the building,” explained Michael Lavery, a planning specialist for the Clearwater Parks and Recreation Department. “If you think about the location, it’s exposed to the elements 365 days a year.”

Pier 60, named for the state highway that terminates in Clearwater, sits on the same spot as the original Clearwater Pier, built from wood in 1928.  It was replaced by a concrete structure in 1962. The present pier was opened in 1994. 

Lavery says the bait shop on the pier will be closed for part of the work, which runs through early February with another round of work scheduled for early March.

Officials say most of the pier will stay open while the work is being done.
