COPS filming with Sarasota County sheriff's deputies

SARASOTA (FOX 13) - Its catchy tune and heart-pounding moments have carried TV show COPS to it's 30th year on television.

Over the last 10 weeks, the show's producers have been riding along with the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office, filming as deputies pull over speeders, search for drugs and face the unknown.

"It is the closest thing to reality television you will get. It is reality television," said COPS cameraman, Jo.

"Every agency has it's own pulse, Every place is different and every officer/deputy is different," said Jo.

That is what show producers want to convey on TV. Even after 30 years, it still brings a lot of attention to the men and women behind the badge.

COPS first rode with Sarasota Deputies 20 years ago.

"It really shows the public at large the well trained work force we have. The men and women, how dedicated they are here. How well equipped they are and how beautiful our community is," said Major Paul Richard.

Since then, COPS has been back twice. Each time, crews said they notice positive changes in the area.

"I would jump in the car with these guys anytime. They know what they are doing. I rode here a few years ago and I actually noticed that crime all over here is down here. That just shows, to me, they are doing their job," said Jo.

Major Paul Richard with the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office said it is thanks to hard work and a close community connection.

"We have a tremendous historic crime reduction here, locally, and we are super proud of that. With that, understand though, we have to be very vigilant in the role that we play," he said.

Even after the crews stop rolling, deputies continue their job, no matter what they face.

"They come across people at a worst moment in their lives and they realize they are there for you. They are out there to protect you," said Jo.

The 29th season of COPS begins in June. Episodes from the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office are expected to air in July.
