POINCIANA (FOX 13) - Slick roads may be at fault in an unimaginable tragedy for two central Florida families.
A crash Saturday night killed three children in two separate vehicles, after one fishtailed into the path of oncoming traffic on a rural Poinciana highway.
Anthony Rubio's family said he was a ball of energy and constant source of joy to his grandmother.
"He had a beautiful smile. He was a beautiful kid," Kim Koherlt said Monday.
Saturday night, around 8:40 p.m., the 6-year-old who loved Xbox and Batman was ripped away from the world in an instant.
Anthony, his two little sisters, Meliyna and Melanie, his mom Brittany Collins and her boyfriend Javier Aguilar were driving down Cypress Parkway when their car swerved on the wet road and hit another car head-on.
Anthony died at the scene. Two children in the other car, ages 6 and 8, were also killed.
Javier, who deputies believe was driving, was in critical condition in the hospital. Brittany was said to be stable and expected to recover.
Making the situation more difficult for Brittany and her family, the memory of another family member killed five years ago under similar circumstances.
Brittany's sister, Ashley was killed in a car accident following bad weather.
"Five years ago, when we lost Ashley in a car accident, I put an 'A' around my neck to honor her. Unfortunately, this 'A' has to honor Anthony also," Anthony's grandfather, Pete Koherlt said.
As both families cling to hope, they're asking for prayers to pull them through.
"I'm hurting. I lost a big part of my heart when my daughter died and now the other part is going. I still have a big heart, but it's getting voids in it," Brittany's mother, Kim Koherlt said.
Polk deputies confirmed the roads were slick at the time of the accident. They said all the children involved appeared to have been in car seats and wearing seatbelts.
The accident was still under investigation.
