A Sarasota County sheriff's deputy caught a driver going the wrong way on Interstate 75 Monday.

It happened around 11 a.m.  LT. Daniel Tutko's dash camera caught the moment 21-year-old Ryan Fleury, of Port Charlotte, sped past on the shoulder.

Deputies say Fleury drove at least six miles in the wrong direction, on the shoulder, at speeds up to 70 miles-per-hour.

Officers caught up with him. They said Fluery's blood alcohol level was .28 - three and half times the legal limit.

"It just rings home the point that people should not be out drinking and driving," Lt. Tutko said. "It would've been catastrophic. Someone would've been seriously injured or killed as a result of this person driving impaired."

Lt. Tutko added, Fleury admitted to his major mistake.

"He apologized for being out there, and possibly putting the public at risk," Lt. Tutko said.

Fleury faces charges of DUI, obstruction and fleeing to elude.

Deputies issued a reminder to anyone who sees a wrong-way driver:

Move safely to the other side of the road or come to a stop if possible. Dial 911 immediately and never turn around to follow the driver; this can put you and others in more danger. Remain vigilant and don't allow distractions to take your attention off the road!
