Old St. Pete PD headquarters being demolished

Mayor Rick Kriseman was there as demolition began on the old St. Petersburg Police Department Headquarters.

Demolition day arrived Tuesday for the previous police headquarters in St. Petersburg

In about two years, the city block where the 70-year-old building once sat will become a mixed-used development called, "Orange Station." It will include more than 60 condos and apartments. It will also feature shops, restaurants, a public courtyard, office space and parking.

As part of the new development, there will also be a public art display to honor the "Courageous 12." In the 1960s, 12 Black officers sued the city in order to have the same rights and benefits as their white colleagues – and they won.

The special tribute will be called "Badge of Justice."
