Downtown Tampa road closed after Regions Bank window breaks, causing glass to fall from 27th floor

A gaping hole in the 27th floor window of the Regions Bank building caused a roadway in downtown Tampa to close Tuesday.

The road closure on Ashley Drive between Jackson Street and Whiting Street is still in place after officers with the Tampa Police Department closed it off around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday. They said the road closure will be in place for an "unknown amount of time."

Officials tell FOX 13 that renovations were underway on multiple floors when a construction worker damaged the window.

It sent shards of glass falling onto Ashley Drive, even as far as MacDill Park just off of the Riverwalk. No injuries were reported.

"I could imagine a huge shard of glass coming down on me, that’s pretty frightening," said Elizabeth Lloyd, who works in the building.

Crews are expected to have the glass repaired by the end of the day.
