Driver charged with DUI manslaughter in bicyclist's death
ST. PETERSBURG (FOX 13) - The man accused of killing a bicyclist while driving under the influence on the Howard Frankland Bridge Wednesday was officially arrested and charged early Thursday morning.
William Matthews, 67, of Bay Harbor Island, faces charges of DUI manslaughter and leaving the scene of a crash involving a death. He was taken to the Pinellas County Jail.
Florida Highway Patrol officers said Matthews was headed south on I-275, near mile marker 36 just before the hump on the Tampa side of the bridge, when he hit the bicyclist, 44-year-old John Brennan, of Sayreville, New Jersey.
Brennan died at the scene.
Traffic was reduced to one southbound lane for several hours Wednesday evening while investigators processed the crash scene.
Meanwhile, troopers said Matthews drove away, but was quickly pulled over in Pinellas County, near Ulmerton Road and Roosevelt Blvd. N.
