Driver, dog seriously injured following school bus crash

A driver and dog have serious injuries following a crash with school bus, fire officials say.

On Friday, before 10:30 a.m. Hernando County fire units responded to the accident on State Road 50 near McKethan Road between a passenger vehicle and a school bus. When they arrived, there was heavy damage to the vehicle, with the driver trapped inside.

The school bus was carrying 20 high school students and a driver was on board, fire officials report. Only three students were evaluated for minor injuries and everyone else declined medical help.

The driver of the car had to be extricated and was in critical condition when transported to Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point. A dog was also found inside the vehicle with serious injuries, and was turned over to Hernando County Animal Services.

According to Florida Highway Patrol troopers, the driver turned into the path of the school bus.
