Man involved in crash with Sarasota deputy dead after slamming into telephone pole: FHP

A driver was killed after hitting a telephone pole Thursday evening after troopers said he was involved in a different crash that injured a Sarasota County deputy. 

What we know:

The Florida Highway Patrol said the driver, a 31-year-old Bradenton man, was driving off after he was involved in a different crash in the private driveway of the University Club, which is located at Lockwood Ridge Road and Nature Circle.

The man, who was driving a pick-up truck, drove over the grassy median that separates north and southbound lanes of Lockwood Ridge Road. That's when troopers said he crossed over the southbound lanes and entered the grassy shoulder before hitting a telephone pole. 

The man died at the scene of the crash, officials said.

FHP has not released many details about the previous crash that involved the Sarasota County deputy. Troopers did say that the deputy was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

What we don't know:

It's unclear if the driver hit the deputy or the deputy's vehicle.

FHP said they are continuing to investigate the deadly crash. The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office said Lockwood Ridge Road near 53rd Street is closed down in the southbound lanes, and drivers in the area should seek an alternate route.
