The Tampa Police Department is investigating a hit-and-run that killed a father and injured his two sons.

The accident happened Sunday afternoon near New Tampa Boulevard and Wood Sage Drive just before noon.

Police say a family of three was riding bikes on a marked bike path when a car veered off the road, striking all three.

"This is a family that is in a very tough situation," said Tampa Police Chief Brian Dugan. "Their life changed instantly just before noon as they were doing a family bike ride."

The father, Pedro Aguerreberry, died a short time after being transported to the hospital. His youngest son, 3-year-old Bennett, has serious injuries. His second son, eight-year-old Lucas, was transported with non-life threatening injuries.

Police say the driver abandoned the car in a public parking area of a nearby community about two miles away from where the family was hit.

Detectives have an individual in custody. They are interviewing the person to determine his role in the crash.
