Fire ants form floating 'rafts' in Alabama floodwaters

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (FOX 13) - Severe weather struck areas between Alabama and Tennessee, causing fire ants to, once again, become living rafts to stay above floodwaters.
Floating fire ants have been an interesting sight to see over the years. In North Alabama, an army of them banded together to float atop flood waters in order to survive. WAAY captured a quick photo of the phenomenon.
According to National Pest Management Association, the ants link their legs together to create a living raft, which allows them to eventually float to a dry location, and build a new colony. The organization said fire ants have a “waxy exterior” that assists in expelling water.
