Fire truck accident blamed on 'move over' law violation

TAMPA, Fla (FOX 13) - Some local first responders are lucky their fire truck protected them. 

Four Hillsborough County Fire-Rescue personnel were attending to a medical call beside I-75 North near the Sun City exit around 2:45 a.m. Monday when a semi sideswiped the fire truck. 

State troopers cited the driver for not moving over as required by state law. 

"Some people aren't aware of the move over law and we've had two engines and now a truck hit by drivers crashing into them," says Deputy Chief Jason Dougherty. 

He says the ladder truck is a total loss and it will cost more than $1 million dollars to replace it. 

Dougherty says the truck did its job and protected the firefighters and deputies who were attending to the patient. Fire truck drivers are trained to block lanes to protect personnel from traffic.
