Gator wrangled from ocean in Fernandina Beach
AMELIA ISLAND, Fla. - A large alligator surprised beachgoers along the shore of Fernandina Beach on Amelia Island.
Bob Neyland said he was vacationing from Charlotte when he saw the gator on Sunday. "We looked out and saw a big giant thing floating out out there," Neyland said. He was surprised that it was an alligator in the ocean's surf.
He said he watched the gator swimming up and down the beach for about three hours. Fish and Wildlife officers eventually wrangled the gator in.
Alligators can survive in saltwater for a few hours or days, but they live primarily in fresh water.
The gator was eventually euthanized.
