ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - St. Pete Police have identified an alarming trend that goes in hand with the city’s gun violence problem.
Chief Anthony Holloway told FOX 13 of 230 guns stolen through September this year, 164 (71%) of them were taken from cars. Most of the cars were unlocked.
"You have a right to carry a gun but once you get out of your vehicle please lock it," Holloway said. "Don’t give people the opportunity to use the gun on someone in the community."
There have been 28 homicides in the city of St. Pete in 2021, compared to just 15 for the entire year of 2020.
Chief Holloway says the guns run about $300 on the street or they are being exchanged for drugs.
