Haines City shooter won't face charges in deadly confrontation, police say

A man who shot someone to death outside a convenience store Sunday afternoon will not be prosecuted.

Investigators say Devonte Duga acted in self-defense when he was attacked by Furious Shell at Family Discount on Martin Luther King Blvd in Haines City, Florida.

Investigators say the conflict began when a customer’s wallet came up missing in the store mid-afternoon. After the store clerk reviewed a surveillance video, Shell was blamed for stealing the wallet.

Shell began arguing with the clerk.

Duga, who just happened to be within earshot, jumped in and Duga and Shell ended up outside.

Detectives say Duga tried to go back into the store, but Shell blocked him and the fight quickly escalated.

“Shell pulled out a gun and started hitting Duga on the head,” said Haines City Police Chief Jim Elensky.

Elensky says Duga wrestled the gun from Shell and shot him four times.

“It is definitely self-defense,” said the chief.

Therefore, Duga was not charged.
