Head-on Polk County crash kills 1, seriously injures 1: PCSO
POLK CITY, Fla. - A deadly Polk County crash is under investigation.
It happened shortly before midnight on Saturday at 18870 North Commonwealth Avenue.
According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, a 34-year-old man from Orlando was driving a 2021 Mazda CX9 north on Commonwealth Avenue when he crossed the center line and slammed head-on into a 49-year-old Lakeland man who was driving a 2021 Toyota Corolla.

The driver of the Corolla died at the scene.

First responders said the driver of the Mazda suffered serious injuries in the crash, including broken ribs and a fractured wrist.
He was taken to an area hospital.

Deputies said it is unclear why the Mazda’s drive crossed the center line, adding that criminal charges are possible pending the outcome of the investigation.
The roadway was closed for approximately four hours.
