Homemade speaker sparks evacuation in Avon Park
AVON PARK (FOX 13) - A large aluminum drinking mug converted into a homemade speaker promoted the evacuations of a church and nearby apartment complex in Avon Park Sunday morning.
Police were alerted to a suspicious bag after a child noticed it near the First Christian Church around 10:30 a.m.
After a deputy saw the bag he immediately began to clear the block and shut down traffic to the area. The church had already evacuated by the time deputies arrived.
The bag contained a "Bubba Keg" and other speaker parts. An explosive detection dog was used to confirm that there were no bomb materials in the bag.
Deputies suspect the bag may have been left by a homeless person in the area.
