Killer whales swimming close to shore delight New Zealand beachgoers

A pod of orcas delighted people gathered on a strand near Raglan, New Zealand, on May 14, swimming into shallow water close to shore as they hunted.

Chris Williams, who recorded footage showing three of the killer whales close to shore, joked that they were celebrating the first day of “level two”, a phase of New Zealand’s coronavirus plan which eased travel restrictions and allowed for the opening of pubs, restaurants and cafes.

New Zealand is home to around 150-200 orcas. The New Zealand Herald said approximately10 were counted in Raglan Harbour on May 14.
