Woman dies after attack at Largo home, husband faces murder charge

A Largo man now faces a first-degree murder charge after his wife died following a sledgehammer attack on Christmas Day.

Largo Police said Jonathan McPhee called 911 on Dec. 25, telling dispatchers he had killed his wife and was planning to take his own life because of health and financial issues.

"I clubbed her and I'm going to try to stab myself in the heart," McPhee reportedly said.

When first responders arrived at the scene, they said they found McPhee outside with self-inflicted stab wounds, then found his wife lying in bed with severe injuries to her head.

She underwent emergency surgery on that day and remained in critical condition until Monday, when she died from her injuries.

While medical staff treated McPhee, investigators say he told them, "just let me die."
