Frito-Lay recalled its Lay's classic potato chips over undeclared milk allergen possibly in the product that could affect a person with an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk and may risk a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they eat the product.

The chip recall occurred in December 2024 with the cooperation of the FDA, according to Frito Lay.

What they're saying:

A Frito Lay spokesperson tells FOX Television Stations that "This is not a new recall or a change to what was previously announced. The recall was executed in December in full cooperation with the FDA when the issue was identified. The recall was limited to two states, and recalled product has been removed from the marketplace.

In Dec. 2024, the Food and Drug Administration recalled 6,344 bags of 13 oz bags of Lay’s Classic Potato Chips. These recalled products were distributed in Oregon and Washington.

A month later on Jan. 27, the agency updated its guidance, classifying it under a Class 1 recall — its highest risk classification — which means exposure or consumption of the chips could cause "serious adverse health consequences or death," FOX Business reported, citing Newsweek.

The FDA noted that no allergic reactions related to the recall have been reported to date, and there are no other Lay’s products, flavors, sizes, or variety packs that were recalled.

Frito-Lay tells FOX Business it was notified of the undeclared milk after being contacted by a customer.

What you can do:

Consumers in Oregon and Washington with the recalled chips that have both a "guaranteed fresh" date of February 11 and a manufacturing code of either "6462307xx" or "6463307xx" should throw the food away immediately, especially if someone in their household has a milk allergy, according to the FDA notice from December.

Anyone with the recalled chips can call Frito-Lay Consumer Relations at 1-800-352-4477 (9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. CST, Monday-Friday).
