Long-time Tampa city worker brings holiday feel to her workspace

If you visit Lorraine Eden’s office cubicle during the month of December, it’s easy to tell that it’s Christmas season, thanks to a bevy of decorations.

"I'm very attracted to candy canes," Eden said with a smile. "Whenever I see an elf, I usually buy one."

The long-time City of Tampa employee works as a customer service representative for Parks and Recreation and special events.

For the past 17 years, she’s been renting out picnic tables, both on the phone and in person. Customers who visit in person get treated to a literal "moving" Christmas display.

"That's fun, if the doors open and close and then something starts to move, they sort of brace themselves, like did something just move?" Eden explained.

The magical movements are achieved by using an invisible fishing line attached to the open/close metal elbow on the interior top of the door. Decorations are attached to the line and guided by clips on the ceiling. When the door opens or closes, a handful of decorations move up or down.

"They come back. They'll take pictures. They'll come in to see how it works," Eden said.

Eden has been decorating her cubicle for nearly a decade. She also puts up decorations for Gasparilla, Easter, Halloween, Thanksgiving and other celebrations.

"I've always liked to decorate, and it just sort of grew. People give me things that they think might work, and it just grew," she said.

Eden hangs and takes down all the decorations before and after her shifts. As for where all these items are stored, she has an upstairs storage unit. Many of the decorations have stories attached to their origins.

"Every year I make a video of my cubicle. I put it on Facebook, and my friends will say, I remember I gave you that. It's very nice," Eden said  "It's a lot of memories. You can't not smile when you see this."
