Lower your blood pressure with these foods
TAMPA (FOX 13) - Over 70 million Americans have high blood pressure. Millions turn to prescription drugs to keep it under control. However, there are certain foods that can also help in reducing the risk of hypertension.
It all starts with salt. Sodium is a major player in raising your blood pressure. Instead of using lots of salt to add flavor to your diet, try using other spices like garlic or parsley. You can also try salt alternatives like Mrs. Dash.
Fruits and vegetables are loaded with magnesium and potassium. Both of these are known to offset sodium in your diet and lower your blood pressure. So be sure to load up on citrus fruits, bananas, tomatoes, and even potatoes.
Calcium in dairy products has also been found to offset high blood pressure. Low -fat cow’s milk or soy milk will do the trick.
Whole grains are also loaded with magnesium and a good way to fight high blood pressure. Try adding whole grain pasta, rice, or cereal to your diet. Be sure to keep an eye on the serving size though -- you don’t want to load up on too many carbohydrates.
Usually hypertension is defined as blood pressure above 140/90, and is considered severe if the pressure is above 180/120. If you think you might have high blood pressure, always contact your doctor.
