Man kills stepdaughter, self in Florida Hospital shooting, deputies say
TAMPA (FOX 13) - The sound of gunshots rang out through the third floor of Florida Hospital Tampa around 7 a.m.
Authorities wasted no time responding.
"We treated it as an active shooter since we had so many calls about shots," HCSO's Col. Donna Lusczynski explained.
They arrived to find 70-year-old Steven Reynolds of Dade City dead on the floor of a hospital room. His gunshot wound appeared to be self-inflicted.
A woman was rushed from the same room to the ER, where she died. She was later identified as 41-year-old Alonna Tedesco, Reynolds' stepdaughter.
Tedesco was a school nurse at both Hudson High and Middle School, according to Pasco County school officials. She was the wife of Dr. John Tedesco, a family practitioner in Land O' Lakes, and was also a mother.
Investigators are working to learn more about the relationship between Tedesco and her stepfather to find out what led up to the violence.
"We are in the process of conducting our investigation, interviewing family members and staff of the hospital," Lusczynski continued.
Now, returning to business as usual will be tough for hospital staff.
"The hospital is working, they're functioning, they're doing their best," Lusczynski added. "Of course, their employees are traumatized as well."
Tedesco's family and friends are taking to Facebook to express their grief, saying this was a "senseless tragedy."
According to the victim's page, Tedesco's mother-in-law just passed earlier this month due to illness.
