BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (WJBK) - How far would you go to grant a stranger's dying wish?
A teenager in west Michigan brought a dying man his favorite pizza from 225 miles away.
Rich Morgan and his wife love Steve's Pizza in Battle Creek and planned to make the trip from Indianapolis knowing it could be their last chance to enjoy their favorite slice.
But Rich's cancer was too advanced, forcing him to go into hospice care. Unknown to them, Julie's father called Steve's Pizza - and 18-year-old Dalton Shaffer, picked up the phone.
"He said that his family was thinking about coming up and grabbing pizza," said Dalton, a pizza delivery worker. "But due to the circumstances they weren't able to do that."
Julie's father was only hoping for a card. Steve's Pizza doesn't deliver, and certainly not for a three-and-a-half-hour drive.
But Dalton had a different idea, cooking a mushroom and pepperoni pie, loading it into his car, and driving through the middle of the night, dropping pizza off in person.
"The family came out, gave me a hug," Shaffer said. "It was cool. The expressions on their face and everything like that.
The Morgan family, enjoyed the pizza, and sharing the incredible story on Facebook, thanking Dalton for delivering what they call, the best pizza in the world.
Dalton responded with this message in return.
"Anybody that is watching this, keep them in mind and pray for them," he said. "I hope the best for them and I hope the Lord gives them comfort."
Since Dalton was not able to leave work until after it closed, he did not arrive in Indy until 2:30 a.m. The family offered to put him up for the night, but he refused, saying he had to drive back to work for his next shift - that same day.
