Reward increased in Polk County cold case

Crime Stoppers has increased the reward to $9,500 for information leading to the arrest of the person who shot and killed Darnell Powell as he slept at a friend’s house.

Winter Haven police announced a neighborhood canvass with relatives of Darnell Powell, who was shot while sleeping at a friend's home back in 2018. Police still haven't identified a suspect or made any arrests.

It will take place Monday, Nov. 1, and comes two weeks after CrimeStoppers increased the reward for information to $9,500.

Darnell Powell was only 21 years old when his life was cut short by a bullet that pierced through a bedroom window at 4:26 a.m. September 29, 2018.  He was sleeping at a friend’s house on the 500 block of Avenue V Northeast when someone shot through the bedroom window.

Police say his friend had an argument with someone earlier that night.
