WESLEY CHAPEL (FOX 13) - Some Pasco County high schoolers are using their creativity to solve complicated problems, an their quick-thinking landed them a spot in a worldwide competition.
Three seniors are representing Wiregrass Ranch High School at the Odyssey of the Mind international creative problem solving competition for students, being held this year at Iowa State University.
"It's about creativity. Taking what you have and making the best use of it," explained Wiregrass Ranch student and Odyssey team member, Kayla Guilierrez.
The team has been together for six years. This is the first time they made it to the World Finals. The trio will compete against 36 teams from around the world.
Kaden Robinson, who is also on the team said, "It's kind of fitting, reaching, like, the highest point during my last year, able to compete at this level."
They are the only high school from Pasco County to make the finals this year.
"We are really excited," 17-year-old Donovan Snider said. "We been working toward trying to achieve this for six years."
The students are given a budget of $150 to solve their designated problem. This year's task is called "No Cycle Recycle". The kids have to created a self-propelled vehicle that also recycles and travel's without pedaling.
"We created a railroad cart, or a pump cart," Kayla said.
"We all know that real life is about solving problems feeding your kids, paying your bills, getting from point a to point B on time," explained Freda Abercrombie, the Regional Director for Odyssey of the Mind. "Odyssey of the Mind incorporates a lot of those skills."
Those skills are ones these students find invaluable.
"It's such an amazing program that has altered my life so much, and everyone I talk to likes so much," Kayla said.
The World Finals will take place May 25 to 28 at Iowa State University.
