Authorities believe that he died of a single self-inflicted gunshot on Dec. 15 at around 10:08 p.m.

Authorities said there were two others at the home when the suicide happened: an adult woman and a child—neither directly witnessed the shooting, and neither was related to Maynard, according to the sheriff's office.

Maynard became a deputy sheriff in Jan. 2017 and was most recently assigned to Central District Patrol, where he was a dual-certified deputy sheriff.

PSCO says while they are investigating the suicide and waiting for a medical examiner's report, they do not believe there was any foul play in Maynard's death.

"Deputy Maynard’s death is such a tragedy. Our thoughts, prayers, and support are with his family, friends, and coworkers," Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said. "We are making sure Greg’s coworkers have access to both peer and professional counseling. I encourage anyone who may have feelings of self-harm to reach out for help. Florida operates an outstanding Suicide Prevention Lifeline—call or text 988 or reach out through chat by visiting their website."
