Post-Fourth of July trash strewn along Siesta Key beach
SIESTA KEY, Fla. - The cleanup process along Siesta Key Beach began early after beachgoers celebrating the Fourth of July left their trash behind.
The same Sarasota man who documented the trashed beach after Memorial Day took video of the litter-filled beach the Wednesday after Fourth of July.
Volunteers with Keep Sarasota County Beautiful were out early cleaning up the beach but video showed bags upon bags filled with trash along with cans and papers, even tents and chairs, strewn along the beach.
The beach was clean and clear by 8:30 a.m. by volunteers and Sarasota County staff, the county said.
"That much trash could hurt the environment and marine life," scientists with Mote Marine Laboratory tweeted after the Memorial Day mess. But that didn't stop revelers from leaving behind piles of trash on the following holiday.
"Unfreakin-believable," said the man who took video of the post-Fourth of July mess. "I still don't get it man. You bring it in, dude, take it out!" he said.
"Well the county will have it cleaned up by 9 or so, and our beautiful beach will be number one again, no thanks to all you lovely folks that came for the free fireworks and left all your (expletive). Everybody have a good day," he said.
