Pregnant woman killed trying to cross Gibsonton Dr.

TAMPA (FOX 13) - A mother of two, with a third on the way was hit and killed while crossing the street Wednesday. Now, family and friends are mourning her loss while trying to understand how something like this could happen.

It happened on Gibsonton Drive in Hillsborough County around 6 a.m. friends say Leanna Mammen was walking from a nearby Walmart after picking up groceries for her two young sons, but she never made it home.

Tragically, she and her unborn child – third son - lost their lives. She was 21-years-old

"She was kind, and she was a good mother, and she was a good person," Mammen’s friend, Kayla Vagedes told FOX 13 News after learning her friend had passed.

Vagedes said Mammen was the first friend she made after moving just a few doors down in a mobile home community off Gibsonton drive.

"I would come over here every day. We would just hang out, or whatever, and I would help her with her kids," Vagedes recalled.

An hour before she was hit and killed, Mammen posted a picture of her youngest son on Facebook, joking, "he's up at 5 a.m. lord child. Someone wants pancakes."

The expecting mom also shared a picture of her sonogram online, said she was due on September 19. And her oldest was only 4-years-old.

“It's crazy. I wanted to go back to sleep and wake up and this not all be real," Vagedes said. "She was so excited. She was so excited."

A sign posted at the entrance of her neighborhood Wednesday asked residents to pray for Mammen's husband, jerry, who is the community maintenance man. Friends said they are heartbroken for the 21-year-old father who is now trying to find a way to explain to their sons why mommy is never coming home, and why they’ll never get to meet their little brother.

"She loved her kids. Her kids were her everything," Vagedes said.

Authorities said the driver in that crash, 36-year-old Isaac Rodriguez Velez is not facing charges. He tried to avoid hitting Mammen, but by the time he saw her in the dark, it was too late.

Velez, himself, is a father. Deputies said his 4-year-old was riding in the back seat during the crash.
