Rain, strong wind to move through Tampa Bay area ahead of cold blast. Here's how low temperatures could drop
TAMPA, Fla. - Part of the Tampa Bay area is under a marginal risk for severe weather on Monday as a front brings rain and strong wind gusts before much colder air moves in.
FOX 13 meteorologists say rainfall won't be too heavy, but wind gusts could approach 40 mph in some areas, with windy conditions sticking around as temperatures drop sharply.
Timeline for rain, then cold
According to FOX 13 Meteorologist Valerie Mills, most of the rain will occur in the mid-to-late afternoon hours on Monday with gusty winds.
Rain will move through the Bay Area, along with strong wind gusts, Monday afternoon before temperatures plummet.
Showers will be quick-moving, with low rain accumulations of 0.5" or less. A few storms may produce locally heavy rain, with a strong to severe storm possible along the coast, but most will just get windy showers along the passing cold front.
"I think the gusty winds associated with those storms will be a bigger deal than anything severe firing up," Mills said.
Rain should clear out by Monday evening, with arctic air moving in and dropping morning lows into the 30s in many areas by Tuesday.
Temperatures will drop into the 30s by Tuesday morning across much of the Bay Area, with 40s in a few warmer spots.
"We're talking down into the freezing range for parts of Citrus, Hernando and Pasco counties," Mills said.
Persistent winds will make it feel even colder, according to Mills, with much of the region feeling like the upper 20s to 30s early Tuesday.
Wind will make it feel even colder outside Tuesday morning, with wind chills as low as the 20s in some areas.
"For most of the day [Tuesday], these winds are going to be quite intense," Mills said.
The afternoon high could only reach the mid 50s in Tampa on Tuesday, which would represent a drop of about 20 degrees compared to Monday afternoon.
Temperatures will drop well below normal on Tuesday.
Highs in the 50s and 60s are expected to continue the rest of the week and into next weekend.
Temperatures will remain below average for at least the next several days.
