Rays expect St. Pete to rebuild Tropicana Field before 2026 opening day: Report
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla - The Tampa Bay Rays expect the city of St. Pete to rebuild Tropicana Field, according to a letter sent to St. Pete's City Administrator, Rob Gerdes, on Dec. 30.
The team had previously been open to a scenario in which the city could buy out of its agreement to rebuild the ballpark, but the Rays have since shut down that idea.

The Rays also said that an abbreviated season at Tropicana Field would bring on logistical and revenue challenges for the team.
Saying further that a rebuild should start as soon as possible to meet the goal of being ready for opening day in 2026.

The Rays wrapped up the letter by suggesting that key city leaders meet every week to monitor the project's progress.
Major League Baseball has previously noted that they will be naming an independent advisor to evaluate the project's timeline and work in tandem with St. Pete's key city leaders.
After a recent meeting with Rays owner Stu Sternberg, St. Pete Mayor Ken Welch made it clear that he intends to fulfill the city’s obligations to the MLB.
