Second driver arrested after deadly crash in Tampa

Tampa police say they’ve arrested 19-year-old Daniel Hernandez, who’s suspected of taking part in a street race on Dale Mabry Highway that killed a passenger in another vehicle.

Tampa police say they've arrested a second suspect in a crash believed to be caused by street racing, killing an innocent passenger in another vehicle.

Investigators say Daniel Hernandez, 19, was driving a Chevrolet Camaro on the morning of June 3 on Dale Mabry Highway and began racing a BMW 335i driven by Andy Moya Robaina, 22.

According to police, Robaina crashed into a third car that was not racing near W. South Ave., killing Linda Strickland, 63.

Robaina was arrested the day of the crash and faces vehicular homicide and unlawful racing charges.

Police arrested Hernandez on Monday on charges of vehicular homicide, unlawful racing and leaving the scene of a crash with death.

"Tampa Police Department is very clear on this stance," said Officer Nick Wilson. "We have made multiple arrests on street racing. We will not tolerate street racing. If you are involved in street racing, you will face the consequences."

Joyce McMullen, who knew Strickland from more than 50 years and said they were as close as sisters, said Strickland's loved ones are struggling to process the loss.

"I call her phone just to hear [her voice] over her voicemail. It's hard," McMullen said. "You can't wrap your mind around it. I mean, I tried to find words. I can't find the words for it."

McMullen told FOX 13 that Strickland's husband has several broken bones and faces a long recovery. She hopes the drivers accused of causing the crash understand the pain they’ve caused Strickland's grief-stricken family.

"They need to stay in jail like they need to learn they took someone's wife. They took someone's, you know, everything," McMullen said. "It was senseless. It was quick, out of nowhere and it has torn a family up."

Hernandez's first court appearance is scheduled for Thursday. Robaina is currently being held in jail without bond after it was revoked due to an unrelated misdemeanor charge.
