ST. PETERSBURG (FOX 13) - As St. Petersburg continues to grow, some historic neighborhoods in the city will be getting protection for their unique identifies.
Tuesday evening the St. Petersburg City Council passed an ordinance that will protect the historic value of houses in Historic Kenwood and Old Northeast neighborhoods.
This means if a property owner wants to build a new home it has to fall under certain architectural guidelines that have created the vibe those two neighborhoods are known for.
As development in St. Petersburg has skyrocketed, homeowners in those neighborhoods have feared the rise of what they call, "McMansions", a massive modern house, which would stand apart from the other homes.
In the 1920's Historic Kenwood and the Old Northeast saw a rise in bungalow style homes which gave those neighborhoods a unique identity.
The St. Petersburg City Council passed the ordinance unanimously.
