Sunshine Skyway Bridge reopens to traffic after heavy fog caused closure

Low visibility forced officials to briefly close the Sunshine Skyway Bridge early Monday morning.

Officials shut down traffic on the iconic bridge just before 4 a.m., but reopened it in both directions before 5:30 a.m. A dense fog advisory was also issued for the coastal areas of Tampa Bay until 10 a.m.

"Once it lifts," he said, "it's going to turn out to be a decent day. I'm okay with the cloud cover, as long as it's nice and mild, and that's what's going to happen."

The last time the Skyway Bridge was closed was the morning of December 21. Florida Highway Patrol troopers reported wind speeds of 68 mph, gusting to 78 mph. Officials typically close bridge traffic when winds reach speeds of at least 40 mph.
