A local teacher has caught the attention of the White House for her focus on STEM education.

Janet Acerra of Forest Lakes Elementary in Oldsmar has received the prestigious Presidential award for excellence in math and science.

Acerra has put a focus on STEM education. STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

"The reason we're working on STEM so hard in America especially is because we want to develop global citizens." said Acerra.

Acerra said, while she is extremely honored by the Presidential award, the greatest reward for her was waiting in the classroom.

"When I returned from D.C. I think that the biggest honor was being able to share something with the kids. I do this job because of them." said Acerra.
