NEW YORK, NY - The theater is famous for having men play women or women play men, but one especially cute actor is the first animal to play a different species. He is a dog playing a wolf. Meet Luchta, star of The Crucible. He's an 18-month-old Tamaskan, a rare breed that combines the "wolfiest" looking qualities of a Husky, a Malamute, and a German Shepherd.
As anyone who has seen Director Ivo Van Hove’s incredible revival of The Crucible can tell you, there is a moment you swear a wolf walks onto the stage and stares out into the audience lost in thought.
He is on loan from his loving human family for this eight month foray into showbiz. While in New York he is partnered with Tony-winning animal trainer William Berloni. Although Luchta hasn’t won a Tony for playing a different species, he was recognized as this year's “Favorite Canine” by Camp Broadway. You can catch Luchta's award winning performance for a few more weeks before he goes back to being a family dog.
