Winter storm causes delays at Tampa International Airport, more than 100 flights affected

On Monday, the winter storm that blanketed much of the country over the weekend caused more than 100 flight delays and cancelations at Tampa International Airport.

"It was pretty stressful because we knew it was snowing back home, so we didn't know what was going to happen," passenger Shai Fellah said. "We were on edge the whole day. You know what's going to happen? What's going to happen?"

Fellah's flight back to Philadelphia was delayed by about 30 minutes.

Others like Heather O'Meara, who came to town from Maine for a soccer tournament, will now have to stay an extra night in a hotel after her flight home was canceled.

"There's nothing they can do, is what they've told us. I guess the issue was, we had a layover in Baltimore, and Baltimore has just canceled all their flights," O'Meara said. "In doing so, they could get us to Baltimore, but then we would be stuck there."

At its peak, Tampa International saw 117 flight delays and 22 cancelations. That's out of 546 flights that were scheduled for Monday.

The impact of the winter storm was not as bad as the last round of disruptions back on Dec. 28th, when more than 50% of flights were delayed at TPA.

"I packed everything ahead of time. We packed a bunch of snacks, and I just tried to chill out as much as possible, so I could ease into my flight," passenger Autumn Cabrera said.

Cabrera's non-stop flight to Denver was still on time as of Monday night. People with direct flights weren't as impacted as those with connections.

"There's going to be delays. There's things out of our control, and (the) weather is one of them, so it stinks, but it's okay," O'Meara said.
