ST. PETERSBURG (FOX 13) - The Bay Area has had some bone-chilling cold nights already. Now, thanks to a group of warm hearts, homeless animals are getting some much-needed comfort.
Maria Padavich has a house full of strangers.
"I didn't know any of these women but I think we will become great friends," Maria said.
The visitors came because of Cindy Hughes. She went to an animal shelter and saw the need for blankets to keep animals warm and decided to help.
"I went on the NextDoor app and I said, 'Looking for ladies who sew," Cindi said.
She started a campaign on social media to enlist support to supply beds for dogs in shelters. She calls her group Beds For All Paws.
Barbara Rosa sews for the group.
"I thought, 'Hey, I sew and I have plenty of time and I love animals," she said.
Strangers drop off blankets, pillows, and towels at her front door. Some sign up to sew the beds.
"I'm really truly seriously overwhelmed," said Cindi. "I thought honestly that maybe I could find one or two people and they would do a dozen beds."
The group has been together less than a week and has already delivered more than 60 blankets to the Humane Society of Pinellas.
"This is amazing," said Director of Community Relations for the Humane Society Twila Cole. "If you give people a chance to be good, they will," Cindi said.
Strangers have come together to help animals in shelters live a more comfortable life.
Cindi and her group will continue to make blankets as long as they are needed.
