Leto High School Falcons soar into state semifinal
TAMPA (FOX 13) - The Leto High School baseball team is on the rise. Like the Falcon mascot that represents the school's athletic programs, the Leto squad is soaring into this week's Florida High School Baseball State Semifinals in Fort Myers.
Leto coach JJ Pizzio has been at the helm for 12 seasons and he's watched this year's team mature from the young group that won the district title in 2015 but didn't make it through the regionals.
"They're a little bit more hungry this time," says Coach Pizzio, "We've definitely pushed it. Now we're in the final four."
The Falcons will play Pace High School on Wednesday at 4 p.m. and, should they win, will play for the elusive 7A State Title.
Senior Jorge Carrero says this team's success, (24-4,8-0 in district play), is due to the team's sense of selflessness.
"Overall, it's just a great collaboration of players," says Carrero," We're out here having fun all the time.
Baseball isn't so much a one-person sport. Having a great group of guys just out playing all the time. Just getting wins."
Just two more wins and the Falcons will make history.
