Author helps veteran share USS Indianapolis story

Historian Sara Vladic met 97 year-old Bradenton resident Don Howison in 2011 while doing research for her book on the USS Indianapolis. It was the Navy ship torpedoed in the final days of World War II, the largest loss of life in U.S. naval history. But the story of how 316 men survived, drifting in the Pacific Ocean for five days, became legendary. Howison was one of those 316, and today, he’s one of only 12 still alive.
